The President of the African Democratic Change (ADeC), Moses Mayekiso expressed deep sadness following the deaths of three firefighters killed while battling a fire at a building belonging to the Gauteng government on Thursday, September 05th, 2018. Mayekiso also commended the Joburg Emergency Services (EMS) for their tireless efforts in rescuing those directly affected by the blaze.

Noting reports that the building did not meet basic health and safety regulations, Mayikeso called on Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo to hold his department accountable for a tragedy which could have been avoided and more importantly, to ensure that this disaster never repeats itself.

It is unacceptable for a government, which is expected to comply with basic regulations, to ignore health and safety issues and by extension, the well-being of its employees and the people of Gauteng. We call on Joburg City Mayor, Herman Mashaba to urgently priortise the issue of building safety as we are concerned by the number of abandoned buildings in the city centre.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the heroic firefighters who sadly lost their lives to save others. May the souls of our fallen heroes rest in eternal peace.
