SUBJECT: ANC Members violently attack community members in Phomolong Hennenman
DATE: Friday, November 09th , 2018
EMBARGO: For Immediate Release
We note with great concern the ANC members and supporters violently attacking community
members in Phomolong Hennenman in the Free State this morning. These community members
attending a meeting of one of our Councilors on their allocated land as they are the legal municipal
recognized recipients of the sites. Where their homes are built. ANC members armed with pangas
in ANC t-shirts and balaclavas started attacking them and chasing them off the land destroying the
shacks and belongs.
Our Councilors were busy allocating sites as per instructions of the resolution taken by the council.
When contacting SAPS W/O Sedikwe, Capt. Lesole, Comm. Matankole and Col Molefe of POP (Public
Order Policing) in Welkom, they were told that had no instructions intervene. With SAPS refusing to
protect the community we will be writing to the Minister of Police to urgently investigate the failure
and refusal of police to protect South African Citizens. The failure to act by the police is disgraceful
These ANC members have been illegally occupying the land from July this year with the ANC Mayor
calling for more ANC members to do so. Council had instructed the Municipal Manager to have the
illegal occupants removed. However, under the instruction of the Mayor, he failed to do so. We will
be opening a criminal case against the Municipal Manager today as well as writing to the Minister
of COGTA to intervene.
The municipality had already allocated the stands to these community members who are now being
punished for supporting our party after the lack of service delivery in the Municipality. Our
councillors and community members have housed these community members with tents, so we ask
that’s those in the area who can assist to please do so.
